Whoa.
I've always figured that if I'm going to be stuck driving The Mommy Van of Lost Slashers----instead of say, a sleek red Porsche----I could at least plaster the back bumper with snotty stickers. Like, "Mean people breed little mean people", and "Speak your mind even if your voice shakes". My favorite by far is "God was my copilot, but we crashed into a mountain and I had to eat Him." I live in the Bible Belt, Republican and mostly fundamentalist, and that sticker's gotten me more than a few weird looks. (The car hasn't been keyed yet, thankfully.)
So I'm strolling through Sam's Club with the kid when a woman and her six kids approached me, asking if I was the lady with the "God was my copilot" sticker. Do I admit to it? I must have had that please-don't-kill-me look on my face, and she started to laugh. Turns out they thought it was great, and just wanted to meet somebody brave enough to slap it on her car. Her kids LOVED it. She's home-schooling her kids (NOT for religious reasons) and is fairly appalled by the lack of any kind of liberal community here. I think those are six very lucky kids. She shook my hand. I'm in shock, but really happy that I'm not alone out here. Who knew?

Anyway - I LOVE your bumper sticker. I'm originally from NY and have opinionated bumper stickers all over my truck. First thing I noticed on the road in and around LA - not a lot of people have bumper stickers at all no less opinionated ones. I've had very intersting experiences on the road with people (including a pair of CHiPs one day) riding my tail reading my bumper stickers.

One of our county's biggest (and poshest) high schools is across the street from a huge Baptist megachurch. Ten thousand members, complete with gym and daycare and all those things that allow people to never have to associate with the unwashed heathens around them. The high school is widely known as "_______ Baptist North", because the minister essentially has veto power over nearly everything at the school. There's no gay-straight alliance there----and it's been requested several times---because the teachers all admit to being afraid of losing their jobs if they agree to sponsor it.
This same minister has a really interesting history. He started in a smaller town nearby, and wound up causing a huge split. My stepmother's ex-husband was a member of that church, but she attended a Methodist church with her kids. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer at 34, the minister told her husband that she was being punished by God because she wasn't a properly submissive wife. The marriage dissolved fairly soon after that. The thought of this man being "spiritual leader" of 10K people is beyond terrifying to me. It's no surprise that this community is bastion of Republican righteousness. Well, that was a fairly random rant, wasn't it?

Peter's webpage is: http://www.petertork.com/
and he sings with James Lee Stanley as Two Man Band (and they're about to start a tour on the east coast early next year, starting off with recording a new CD out here in LA next Sunday, 11/23 - the first time I will ever see Peter live... :>):

And your rant may have been fairly random, but it's not because I've got a HUGE soapbox I carry around with me where I talk about civil rights in all colors and sexes. The whole "God and Country" thing is getting way out of hand. Everybody's God is different, and it's the crowd mentality that scares me the most.
I know from a good friend of mine (from college) who went to her recent reunion at our school (she runs a gay alliance in White Plains) to basically be OUT to them. It's a Catholic College run by the Sisters of Charity and Jesuits. And while we were there, the whole gay thing was not well looked upon but it was other gays who were looking down their noses at us and makign judgements on us. 25 years later they're all out and happy, and I know there's a gay alliance at the college (run by a really cool nun!) but they're very secretive about it because of the whole Catholic thing.
To me it's all bullshit. I just believe in "be yourself", gaym, straight, bi, purple, green, orange, martian, we all exist in the same place and should be able to exist peacefully without having to explain ourselves. Unfortunately, most of us aren't allowed to think that way out loud a whole lot.
Via the JamesLee list (where he was posting his political opinions for a bit until some of his listers threatened to quit because they didn't want to discuss politics), he and another lister started a political list and we rant about this stuff over there now. And there's a fair amount of ranting on my own journal too.
Anyway, PLEASED to make your acquaintance! I look forward to many more conversations!
My other friend in Tennessee lives near Brentwood and an hour from Nashville, so I think she's on the other end of the state. On LJ she's
