Peter Tork has a new band? Cool. I'll have to check it out. I'm in Knoxville, by the way, where the city council is in the process of passing a declaration acknowledging the role of the Almighty God in the founding of this country. I can hear the Founding Fathers rolling in their graves as we speak. God forbid---heh---that the council members actually earn their salaries by tackling anything important.

One of our county's biggest (and poshest) high schools is across the street from a huge Baptist megachurch. Ten thousand members, complete with gym and daycare and all those things that allow people to never have to associate with the unwashed heathens around them. The high school is widely known as "_______ Baptist North", because the minister essentially has veto power over nearly everything at the school. There's no gay-straight alliance there----and it's been requested several times---because the teachers all admit to being afraid of losing their jobs if they agree to sponsor it.

This same minister has a really interesting history. He started in a smaller town nearby, and wound up causing a huge split. My stepmother's ex-husband was a member of that church, but she attended a Methodist church with her kids. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer at 34, the minister told her husband that she was being punished by God because she wasn't a properly submissive wife. The marriage dissolved fairly soon after that. The thought of this man being "spiritual leader" of 10K people is beyond terrifying to me. It's no surprise that this community is bastion of Republican righteousness. Well, that was a fairly random rant, wasn't it?
